Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Pilates for people living with MS

Katie is a registered Pilates tutor for the MS Society. Pilates can specifically help with improving strength, balance and flexibility which are three qualities often lost in MS.  It can address nearly every major symptom of MS and a specialised Pilates teacher is uniquely well-trained to work with posture and movement.

Pilates is, in general, low risk and well tolerated.

Pilates focuses on the correct movement behaviour by allowing the patient to work in ways that minimise unwanted muscle activity. A specialised Pilates teacher can mitigate inefficient movement patterns and early fatigue. Whilst a neurological patient needs a lot of repetitions, MS patients in particular must avoid becoming fatigued or overheated. Pilates allows for many different movement patterns without as much cardiovascular effort, therefore students can safely work hard.

With all this in mind it is no surprise that Katie chose to specialise in teaching Pilates for MS.  Her classes are run at various locations throughout sussex and she has a large One to One client base.

“Many MS patients will be very disconnected from their bodies. They need to learn to open the dialogue. When they can begin to move in ways they didn't believe possible it changes the belief model.”

“I've been to Katie's pilates group for ms for just over a year.  I have learnt so much and Katie has helped me with my balance, concentration and also to relax! I would recommend to anyone if you have ms or not.  It makes you feel good, meet new people and to do something for you which is usually very rare.”
